Safe at Sea

Trinity House, one of our country’s oldest institutions needed to fulfil their corporate social responsibility through providing educational resources. As the organisation responsible for all the safety of shipping and the well being of seafarers since 1514, the challenge was to communicate their role clearly to Key Stage 1 (5-6 year olds) and construct a number of resources which fit into the National Curriculum. Edge Media who managed the project recruited myself (designer), Sebastian Braun (illustrator) and Vanessa James (educational consultant) to help pull the project together.

This involved brainstorming of concepts, approaches, character formation, branding, identifying key messaging and ultimately production of assets: a folder, poster, worksheets, teachers notes booklet, cards, stickers, website, online games and films.

The client has been so impressed they have asked for the same team to take on the Key Stage 2 resources!

Wedding Invitation

I was honoured to be asked to produce a wedding invitation for my sister and her fiancé. It’s a simple typographic treatment from a verse in the bible, the differing faces represent the two individuals and their response to one another and the small graphical device explores the growth of the relationship baring fruit and flourishing.

Red Bull Stratos

Rockpool Digital asked me to help them with the design and production of the Red Bull Stratos site.

It was a great opportunity to work a dynamic and creatively demanding client. The job took a very collaborative approach from the UX, back-end development and the front-end team to create a product that is technically and visually strong.

Work included responsive desktop and mobile design and fully animated HTML 5 mission experience. Also included was the production and design of media pack and marketing strategies, lots of hard work, but a very happy team and an ecstatic client.

Oasis Hub

The Oasis Trust is a charity which comprises many different facets. They are primarily an educational facility, but at a higher level they aim to have influence which is far wider and holistic. They view education as one aspect of a developing and improving community and environment. As a consequence the website needed to allow this ever evolving and expanding community project. The site has a very flexible structure which allows for multiple administrators, groups, events and activities.

The challenge was to build the architecture in a logical, intuitive way that had strong foundations and the scope for development and growth.

Fuel

The brief was to design a brand and campaign for an enrichment programme for Oasis Schools. The idea behind this concept is that whatever you have an interest or passion for – to develop it, it needs to be fed: to be fueled.

The name has an association with flammability, which is dangerous and exciting. It talks about the feeling, the process and the intent, rather than the activity and therefore taps into the real desire and emotion behind the action. It also has diversity and equality of its use. Whether you fuel your mind through programming computer code, or fueling your ambition by pushing your body to it’s limits, you still need drive and determination to succeed.

One can also interpret the term as an act of provision, which should challenge those in a position to volunteer and feed the enthusiasm of the students.

Chew Valley Relocation

A relocation relocation relocation inspired offering from a compulsive and successful home buyer was in need of branding and a website. The essential site for relocation.

The company is in its infancy, but has great aspirations. Functioning as a consultancy for both individual clients, but also for larger companies dealing with relocating employees, both permanent and temporary. Helen will aim to get under the skin of the client to understand their specific needs and attempt to provide the perfect setting for their new lives within the Chew Valley.

The aim of the site was to more clearly communicate the company’s services, in a aesthetic which is fitting for an engineering specialist who deal with precision and complex, large scale build projects.

Fingerprints in Uganda

Finger prints in Uganda is a charity is in it’s infancy, it is still establishing itself, but has a clear focus on ‘caring by sharing for children in Uganda’ The website needed to provide enough flexibility in its structure to allow for growth and change over time.

The look and feel is energy and activity, it has a notice board sketched quality to the graphical elements to promote a sense of continued activity.

Build on a Wordpress CMS it provides full flexibility for the client to introduce new content through many of the sections of the site.

David Poore is a composer for film and television, his catalogue of work is impressive and the music, inspiring. I was honoured to be asked to redesign his online presence.

A full and comprehensive online strategy was needed, ensuring that all appropriate online channels were covered to represent David and highlight his work. Davidpoore.com functions as the hub for David’s online presence, feeding into his media, wiki and social networking channels.

The brief was simply to create an interface where the work was allowed to speak for itself without the need for cajolery or persuasion, using stylish typography, and a clean interface the site sits happily within the media world it caters for.

Primary Partnership

As part of the Oasis Brightstowe re-brand, there was also a marketing brief to gather the support and interest of local primary ‘feeder’ schools to take advantage of the facilities that the Academy has to offer.

My role was to produce marketing collateral to introduce the vision to the teachers and decision makers from the schools. As part of this pack I produced a folder, a template for inserts for each of the participating departments in the Academy and a leaflet, explaining the vision of the exercise.

Oasis Academy Brightstowe

Design conscious educational institution Oasis Academy got in touch to commission a series of brand identities suitable for a number of educational, social and community based initiatives. The organisation which currently consists of a number of Academies around the country have a strong brand identity uniting much of the Oasis educational family. The Oasis building however, not only meets educational interests but also serves as a hub for social based projects within its local communities.

A need therefore for some visual identities which set themselves apart from the academy, but which also related closely to the established brand elements was necessary.

South West Tree Consultants

Bristol University Alumni

The Bristol University Alumni annually presents its Convocation award to students who have made an outstanding contribution to University life.

The nominations are invited from fellow students or from members of staff.

My brief was to – on a limited budget – provide an eye catching campaign which would both promote the Convocation award and encourage and challenge it’s recipients to engage with the mission of the award by actively nominating their own preferred candidate.

The campaign has been rolled out through flyer posters and online.

Sky HD World Cup Party

Sky wanted an independent online platform, to deliver a social media campaign that would enable their entire Sky+HD customers base to invite friends to a World Cup match party and experience the game in full Sky+HD quality. The campaign would also be motivated by lucrative incentives for both Sky customers and newly referred customers.

The campaign was launched just 6 weeks after initiating, targeted over 2 million HD customers via direct mail and broadcast email. The accessibility of the site has successfully targeted 97% of all browsers and email clients. The campaign to date has generated over 30,000 invitations and has significantly grown the clients lead generation marketing database as well as successfully extended the reach of the Sky brand experience to tie in with the 2010 World Cup.

Sky Switching tool

The project we undertook for Sky was to create a user friendly tool to aid prospective customers work out what involved in the switch over to a Sky provided media package. As part of the project there were many stages that we went to with Sky to come up with a final working product.

My input was through interaction design, graphical design, icon design and client liaising.

Holdfast Training

Holdfast Training provide education and support to the armed forces. Readying army personnel for the demands of action on the front-line, they offer support in wide variety of engineering disciplines, which provide the unique range of skills that are fundamental to the Military Engineer as well as delivering military working animals, handlers and maintainers.

Holdfast also provides training for other Arms and Services, Government Departments and several allied countries. The Military Engineer training provided enhances the Army’s operational capability enabling Royal Engineers to be deployed and succeed anywhere in the world.

Orange Out

The design and usability department at Orange came to us asking for a solution to 3rd party authentication using openid on the French Orange portal. We produced a staged process for users to go through with explanations throughout, this delivery was from user flows through to wireframes and on to the interaction and visual design.

As 3rd party sign in functionality is still new we felt is was appropriate to produce an movie which explained this concept fully. By using an animated character we were able to both ask and answer the fundamental questions of what is openid? why use it? and how to use it? We provided a detailed storyboard of these 3 scenarios with characters, voice over copy, and full illustrations ready for animating.

Parragon Publishing

My involvement in this was to conjure up the original concept.

Parragon are a global publishing house with an enormous library under their belt. The concept was to make the user feel like they were in virtual environment surrounded by books ranging all categories and markets.

The purpose of the site was more an experiential brand exercise, rather than for sales. Parragon continues to deal directly with book merchants and brand license holders.

Christians in Sport

Working with sports enthusiasts, from kids through to professionals, Christians in Sport needed a versatile and scalable online environment which allowed their members to use the site as a resource, not only for networking, but also for support, material and a sense of togetherness.

My involvement in this project was from the client workshop day, exploring the core values of the brand, through to user flows, User experience design, and finally visual treatment.
